A design system for NextStreet's small business platform, supporting distinct tenant brands and helping design, engineering, and internal teams work independently.

A high-velocity organization required a unified design system to support multiple products and teams at scale.

## Background

NextStreet is a platform that enables organizations and municipalities to support small business growth through advising, capital access, and structured programs.

NextStreet engaged my agency as a long-term partner, where I serve as the lead designer and hands-on collaborator, developing the design system and organizing core platform infrastructure to support multi-tenant initiatives and internal teams operating at scale.

The existing design environment supported early momentum across active customers and initiatives.

A single shared workspace enabled speed, even as the platform expanded to serve tenants with distinct branding and content needs.

Designers carried disproportionate responsibility, while engineers, content, and sales teams lacked confidence to move independently

## The Vision

Transform NextStreet’s design foundation into a scalable, multi-tenant system that enables consistent expansion and autonomous teams.

## Clarity was not about reducing complexity, but about enabling each role to operate within clear boundaries without introducing risk.

Designing for Multi-Tenant Initiatives

## Designing for Multi-Tenant Initiatives

NextStreet’s customers operate at the level of initiatives, not individual features. Each tenant brings distinct branding, content, and administrative needs, often under time-sensitive conditions.

Supporting this required a platform that could adapt without fragmentation, allowing multiple initiatives to evolve in parallel while maintaining confidence across both tenant administrators and small business users.

## Design Foundation

To support this scale, a shared design foundation was established to separate structure from expression.

The system replaced one-off adaptations with durable patterns that could flex across tenants while remaining production-aligned.

Rather than prescribing outcomes, it provided a stable infrastructure that allowed teams to build, test, and evolve with consistency.

## Strategy Embedded in the System

Strategic decisions were encoded into structure rather than documentation. Patterns reinforced alignment by default, allowing teams to move independently while maintaining parity.

Over time, autonomy became a property of the system itself, not a dependency on individual expertise.

## Results

Over a two-year partnership, NextStreet’s platform has been transformed into a cohesive, scalable system supporting live users while continuing to evolve.

This work helped establish a durable foundation for NextStreet’s mission to expand opportunity for small businesses at scale.

Engagement across key tenants moved toward and beyond a **40% benchmark**

Internal teams gained the ability to prototype, test, and demo complex scenarios with ease

The platform is now positioned to scale confidently across new partners, programs, and product surfaces
